What are Frequency Inverters?
They are used to control electric motors, most often they are used to regulate the speed of asynchronous electric motors during certain periods of time. When a three-phase asynchronous electric motor is operated with a frequency inverter, it is powered with variable frequency and voltage. The relationship between the frequency (speed) of the electric motor and its voltage is described by a U/f graph.
Types of applications of frequency inverters:
• Constant Torque – This is the load for 90% of major industrial machines. These include hoists, positive displacement pumps, rotary compressors, conveyors, reciprocating compressors, as well as some types of mixers and extruders.
• Constant Horsepower – This type of load is typical for the engineering industry and centrifugal applications. Examples of such loads are winding machines, large drilling machines, drilling machines, cutting machines, planers, drum rollers, lathes.
• Variable Torque – This type of load is most often found in fans, centrifugal pumps, centrifugal fans, turbine pumps, agitators, propeller pumps and axial compressors.
The frequency inverter consists of three main parts:
* Rectifier – converts the supply AC voltage through diode modules into a pulsating DC voltage.
* DC filters – consists of filtering chokes, capacitors and other types of filters.
* Transistor inverter – converts the DC voltage into PWM (pulse-width-modulated) AC voltage.
